I got this last year when I was trying to rebuild my credit, and so far, it's done its job, payments report reliably and I've seen a modest bump in my credit score. That said, the card feels basic and I don't get many perks or rewards. It's not exciting, but it's useful if you just want steady credit building.
I applied for the Amalgamated Bank Secured Visa Card as part of rebuilding my credit after earlier setbacks. It did what I needed: helped me rebuild a positive payment record, get some modest credit limit, and eventually move on to a non-secured card.
But some trade-offs: being a secured card means you tie up a deposit as security, the rewards (if any) are minimal compared to unsecured cards, and fees/interest may be less favourable. So this is more a “step in the right direction” than a long-term standout. For what it is, though, it did the job.
