The Discover it® Cash Back card is best known for its no-annual-fee structure and its standout 5% rotating cash-back categories, plus the unique first-year Cashback Match that effectively doubles all rewards earned in year one. It’s often positioned as a strong entry-level rewards card for everyday spending.
Most users say they love how easy it is to earn high cash back in categories like groceries, gas, and restaurants when they remember to activate them. Many reviewers also appreciate the lack of an annual fee and the friendly customer service experience, which tends to rank highly compared to other issuers. The first-year bonus is frequently described as one of the most generous “welcome offers” in the cash-back space.
On the downside, many cardholders mention that the rotating categories can be inconvenient to track, and the quarterly activation requirement is easy to forget. Some also note that the card is less useful for international travel since acceptance outside the U.S. can be limited compared to Visa or Mastercard competitors, and there are no premium travel perks.
Personally, I think it’s one of the best starter cash-back cards if you’re organized and willing to maximize categories, but it’s not ideal for someone who wants simple, flat-rate rewards or heavy travel benefits.
I love the rotating 5% cash back categories, I earned sweet rewards on groceries and gas. The only downside, cash back posts a little slowly, so balance stays low until payout. Great for someone disciplined with spending.
I’ve been using the Discover it® Cash Back card, and overall I’m very happy. The “Cashback Match” at the end of the first year meant all the cash back I earned got doubled.

The rotating 5% categories each quarter (after activation) allow me to score significant rewards since I align my spend to them.
The things to keep in mind: you must activate the categories quarterly, and if your spending doesn’t align with the bonus categories you might get less value. Also the rotating nature means you have to pay attention. If you’re okay doing that, this is one of the best value cash-back cards out there.
